At first glance, most silicone sealants look almost identical. They come in the same cartridges, promise a waterproof seal and often sit side by side on the shelf. It's easy to assume they're interchangeable—but they aren't.
Different silicone sealants are formulated for different materials, applications and environmental conditions. Choosing the right one can mean the difference between a seal that lasts for years and one that fails after a few months.
One of the biggest differences between silicone sealants is how they cure.
Acetoxy silicones cure quickly and release a distinctive vinegar-like odor as they harden. They're ideal for smooth, non-porous surfaces such as glass, glazed ceramic and tile, making them the preferred choice for many bathroom and kitchen applications.
